Our students

Missouri S&T students are channeling their passion for engineering, energy and the environment to help the university with its research and development efforts. They are not only transforming their education but the world around them. On any given day, students can be seen pedaling human-powered vehicles or framing a home that harvests all of its energy needs directly from the sun.

The Solar House Team is bringing attention to our nation's demand for energy by building a Zero Energy home. To build its fourth home, S&T is partnering with the University of Missouri-Columbia to design and build the most attractive, effective, and energy-efficient solar-powered house for the 2009 Solar Decathlon.

The Human-Powered Vehicle Team constructs a recumbent bike with an aerodynamic shell that is capable of exceeding 45 mph on a flat surface. The team won titles in the West Coast and East Coast competitions that decide the nation's top human-powered vehicle crew in 2007. This spring, they plan to compete in two events, one in Philadelphia, and the other in Portland.

The EcoCAR Team, one of 17 selected by the U.S. Department of Energy, will re-engineer a Saturn VUE, minimizing energy consumption, emissions, and greenhouse gases while maintaining the vehicle's utility, safety, and performance.

The Solar Car Team's Solar Miner VI completed in the 2008 North American Solar Challenge, traveling 2,400 miles from Texas to Calgary, Alberta. The team placed seventh out of 14, and is considering competing in Formula Sun 2009.
